Mini Aged Terra Cotta Pot DIY for Succulents and Air Plants

Hey guys! I painted a few terra cotta pots to look aged and to fit my home decor because it sounded like fun. Thats really the only reason why, haha! It would have been way easier to just white wash them but I really liked how they turned out with the texture on them and they really were fun to make!
To achieve this look I used white chalk paint, a warm gray or taupe chalk paint, small stiff paint brush, cloth and spray bottle, and a sealer. I used a glaze to seal mine.

DIY Glass Cleaner

This DIY glass cleaner is crazy easy to make. All you need is some distilled or reverse osmosis water and some isopropyl alcohol. You could also use a high proof clear grain alcohol without any added flavorings as well. I also added in some essential oils so that I can shake it up and have a linen or room spray too.

Some people use distilled vinegar instead of the alcohol but the vinegar isn't good for some seals and finishes that the spray might come in contact with so I like to stick with the alcohol instead.

Basically mix together half rubbing alcohol (I use 91%) and half water and put it in a spray bottle. My bottle hold two cups, so I use a cup of alcohol and a cup of reverse osmosis water.

In the video I also describe how to make nail polish remover. If you prefer to watch the video on youtube then click HERE.

Repotting and feeding my house plants

Hey! Today I'm showing you a video of us repotting some plants that need some care and some extra compost and how I feed all my house plants excluding the sad, sad, poor little orchid and my succulents which I have yet to get fertilizer for since they don't usually need it (depending on the type) and also because no where in my town has it right now. Anyhoodles, I hope you enjoy it!

How to use an oval makeup brush to apply powder foundation

I have been having the weirdest finish to my powder foundation lately. My skin has changed and so has the seasons so I needed a solution. This oval makeup brush is my solution! It buffs on the powder so well that I no longer have the weird finish that I was getting. It was cake-y and also showing all my dry skin and it was just no good no mater what brand of powder I tried. In this video I show you how I use a large oval makeup brush to apply my foundation and I have a little review on my new favorite mascara.

Polymer Clay Bowl DIY

I haven't used polymer clay for a few years. The last time was when I was making things for terrariums and it wasn't quite what I wanted. Back then I thought you only used colored ones, I didn't know you could paint and glaze it! This was so much more fun! This is a very simple diy that I made for when I want to separate out some succulent and cactus starts. So I made  little echeveria to go on top to show kind of what it would look like with a real plant in it. But I suppose now I have a fake plant that I don't need to take care of. (It's very strange.) I made two bowls, the echeveria, and some beads for my weaving projects out of one package of clay. I was really surprised with the results and the quality, especially since I only somewhat new what to do. But when I was reading up on polymer clay it seemed to me that you could use it very easily with a multitude of mediums. I'm very interested to see how watercolors work on it.

I used the sculpey brand, it was the cheapest on amazon with good reviews and I had a great experience with it. I hardly used any glaze so that should last me for a lot of projects.
I also used basic metallic craft paints and some black craft paint (plus some greens and yellow for the echeveria.) And of course a few paintbrushes. I also needed a small sheet pan that I lined with wax paper just to protect the pan while I baked the clay.

First I just took about three lines of the clay and broke it off.

Then I just worked it all together until it was incorporated well.

Then I smoothed it out into a nice ball.

Next I just used my thumb to push an indent in.

Then I used my thumb and forefinger to pinch around the sides. I mean, really I'm just making a small pinch pot.

Here I am just smoothening out the edges and evening them up. I wanted them to have texture so I didn't make them fully smooth, but I didn't want any crevices for soil to get stuck in.

Now in this picture I'm using my thumb to press down to make a wider bottom.

I flipped it over to smoothen out the bottom and the lower sides.

Last I took a paintbrush end and made a drainage hole.

You can skip this step if you are using this for something other than a live plant. Or if you have an air plant, you can skip this step too.

Now I'm starting on the Echeveria.

First I made five balls of clay about the same size, then five more a bit smaller, then five more a bit smaller again.

Then I formed the leaves.

I stuck them together doing the biggest five first. I used a paintbrush to help press down the ends together.

Here is the last of the first fifteen that I made all pressed to the other two layers.

Then I took three little bits and added them to the top. I used a stiff paintbrush (using the brush end this time) to push in the cracks and to smoothen out bumps.

I also made some beads by  rolling clay into balls and sticking a paintbrush through them.
I set all the clay projects on a small baking pan lined with wax paper to protect the pan and baked them in the toaster oven. My directions said to bake for 1/4 in thickness, so I doubled the time since most everything was thicker than that. The echeveria did just fine in the spots that were thinner.

After they were done baking and had cooled I drew designs on the bowls with a pencil, and then painted everything. I did use a few shades of green on the echeveria to mimic a real plant, but it would have been neat to use a different color like a purple with some red.

After I painted everything I put them all on the tray to glaze them. Glazing the top first, letting it dry, then glazing the bottom and repeating. I put the beads on paintbrushes to glaze them.

The second pot I made was just a bit smaller than the first one, but its still a good size for mini succulents to even get to be a decent size.

Here you can see the difference in size between the small pot...

and the bigger pot.

We got a farm cat!... Kind of.

About two, maybe three weeks ago, I was outside, and their was this cat! She was a bit skittish but she was soooo sweet! Now that she has been around awhile she has gotten even sweeter! She's kind of a dope too. And by dope I mean she falls off of things, and she will sit with one leg hanging of the table, and she will be totally fine with a three year old boy yelling and jumping and waving sticks around (attempting to impress her) but when he make a very quiet indescribable almost growling mucus noise with the hose to the ball pump, she flees is fear. Although, she does seem mildly and sometimes very impressed with Thomas' (the previously mentioned three year old) antics. Which is odd in and of itself.

So basically she is perfect. Except she lives in our crawl space. Did I mention their is a mummified cat under our house too? My husband found it while working down there. Maybe she likes the company? I'm not sure, but what I'm sure of is that she needs to not go into heat and bring all her friends over to party down there. (We're getting her fixed soon.)

Also I made a cake this week and it was pretty so I took pictures.

I made it with xylitol and maple syrup because I have been in a baking mood and I didn't want to get sick off of all the deliciousness. It turned out so pretty though! It's basically the hershey's special chocolate cake but with like 1/2 cup of xylitol and 1/2 cup maple syrup instead of 2 cups sugar. Oh, and with cream cheese frosting because I wanted it to be pretty. Also, I used natural sprinkles and they worked really well. They didn't bleed at all! They sure as heck did when I messed up on those cupcake bath bombs, oh man!!!! (I added glycerin to them and they exploded. [not like nitro glycerin explosion, more like a very slow volcano experiment.])

Did I mention this is the first cake I've ever made like this that turned out remotely good looking? Thats Why I'm making such a big deal about a not particularly spectacular cake.

We harvested our first carrots out of our garden! The aphids and the birds kept eating them so I had to plant them twice and still only ended up with six! They were so good, but probably not worth the effort, haha! Also they all ended up with legs. Obviously my soil needs a lot of work. (Rocks and compacted soil make them have multiple roots.)

The cat again! Well and me. Thomas loves taking pictures so you get one with me in it for once!

Lastly, I've been getting into weaving. I need to make a loom but I wanted to try it out so I used an embroidery hoop. It was way more fun than I thought it would be. I'm really looking forward to trying some new stitches. Is it called stitches or weaves, or what?

Anyhoodles, I might have something more interesting next week, like a healthy ice-cream recipe or something. OOOOO! Or candles!!

Bathroom Stool DIY

I had a bit of a problem. We were redoing our upstairs bathroom and moving up their. My downstairs bathroom has a huge vanity, that is way to big for the space in my opinion but the nice thing about it is that I can keep my makeup box right on it. Moving to the upstairs bathroom though I had a problem again of not having space for my makeup box. We put up shelves in this weird closet space across from the sink and I left a shelf for all my daily used things to be left out looking pretty. Thats where I keep my makeup box. However, when I want to put on my makeup I had no where to put my box! Enter Pintrest.

I was thinking something like this would be pretty. Plus it has lots of storage. Skinny to so it could maybe work.
Apartment therapy

Another option was maybe something shorter. Has some storage and can go under the sink more so that size wouldn't be as much of an issue.
frenchcountrycottage.net

A fun third option would be a little step stool that I could store some things on, but it wouldn't really be tall enough for my makeup box.
kellyelko.com
In the end I actually didn't do any of these... Instead I did an option with no storage because I didn't really need the storage their. I have plenty of shelving across from my sink where I actually keep my makeup box so the main thing was just to have a surface to put the box on while I did my makeup. My upstairs bathroom has a bit of french country going on, and a lot of gray and white. The only color I had was from my hand towel, and that was white and a light pink. So I decided to go with a geometric paint design on a basic wooden stool. Plus the stool was free, so thats a bonus! (Thanks grandma for letting me have your plant stool.)

First I wanted to sand it down to just wood then stain it with a tea stain and oil it. But it was way to difficult to get the whole thing sanded really well so I just sanded the top all the way down and sanded the rest enough for a good coat of paint.

My husband modeling the sanding for me.

After sanding.

After staining with tea. You need to do a few coats of tea and it must be oiled to bring out additional color.

After oiling with hemp oil.

I decided that I didn't like all the wood so I got out some chalk paint and free handed the design. It probably would have turned out cleaner if I used tape but I would also need to be able to use the tape well, and I just didn't have time for that. But I liked the look overall.

The single bit of pink on the top is the same paint I used on the legs. I used a paint that I didn't need to seal on the legs, but of course I sealed the top.

It tucks in nicely when I'm not using it, and I have a bowl and tray for any hair pins and jewelry that I keep on it.

Pink Grapefruit Bath Salts DIY

This recipe is really nice as a base for any kind of bath salt variations that you might want to do, but today I am keeping things simple with this grapefruit version.

This bath salt looks so pretty in a nice jar on my shelf in my bathroom and it makes me want to use it more because I just love how it looks. This recipe has very few ingredients so it is nice for people that worry about allergies especially if you like to give your diy's as gifts. The only thing to think about it the kinds of oils that you use. I'm using grapefruit oil, obviously, because I love the smell. Grapefruit oil is also relatively inexpensive, and with it being the main oil in this recipe that helps keep the cost of any more expensive oils that you might want to use down. Such as, I usually like to add chamomile in this because it is so relaxing, but since the main smell comes from grapefruit I only use a little bit of the chamomile. Alrighty, lets get to it! I have a video that goes along with this diy, watch it below or use THIS LINK to watch it on youtube.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 - 1 cup Himalayan salt
  • 20 drops grapefruit oil
  • 3-10 drops additional oil if desired, such as lavender, chamomile, rose geranium, etc.
Directions

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and put in a pretty container, or an ugly container.
Store with the lid on tight so that it stays dry, and keep away from direct light to preserve the oils the best.

Bubbling Bath Salts

This DIY like most of my DIY's is extremely easy, however this one only requires TWO ingredients! How cool is that?! Like my last few posts this one has a video too! Click HERE to go directly to that video on youtube, or watch it below.

Materials:

  • Mixing bowl
  • 1 cup measuring cup
  • 1/3 cup measuring cup
  • mixing spoon
  • sheet pan

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Epsom salts
  • 1/3 cup body wash

Mix everything together then spread evenly on a sheet pan and let air dry for 24 hours. I like to let it dry for up to 48 hours, and I like to stir and re-spread it every 12 hours but that isn't necessary.

Store in an airtight container, mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of salts with running water for your bath.

Gingersnap Body Scrub DIY

HEY! I did another video! This week I made a gingersnap body scrub. Gingersnaps are my favorite cookies to make and to eat this time of year and I love to make sugar cookie body scrubs so I thought why not use molasses and make gingersnap body scrubs! I also figured the spices would be a bit warming this time of year too. You can use essential oils instead of the spices, but I felt like keeping it simple and making a recipe that pretty much anyone can make without buying anything special. I used sugar for this scrub (duh, cookies! am I right?) and I used coconut oil and almond oil for the moisturizer. I wanted to use coconut oil because I wanted that rich fattiness to kind of mimic butter without, you know, using butter. Anyway this is such a fun recipe because I felt like I was making cookies but unlike cookies this will last longer. Wouldn't this make such a cute gift pared with some homemade gingersnap cookies? If you would rather watch the video on youtube you can easily click the link HERE.

Ingreadiants:
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar (or 1 cup white with 2 Tbsp molasses)
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
1/2 cup liquid oil (such as almond)
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp ginger, ground
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice (or mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and allspice)
*optional body wash/liquid body soap, 1 tsp to 1 tbsp

Directions:
Mix all ingredients and store in an airtight container.
This also works well as a lip scrub just make sure you don't put any soap in it if you use it for that. You can  use just coconut oil and use a little extra to make tubes of lip scrub also. Maybe I should make a video on that.

I've been posting lots of videos and I have a whole bunch more in the works so if you want to keep updated subscribe via email on the side -> or you can also subscribe to my youtube channel, that button is on the side to or just use THIS LINK.

Wonderful Wintergreen Bath Bombs

Bath bombs are really fun use but they can be a bit of a pain to make. My preferred way of making them is without the water and just putting it in a container to sprinkle it in. For gifts you can put it in a sachet with enough for a single use. Like bath packets that you would buy at the store. I like to mix up bath bombs with ingredients that  I want mixed into my bath that can clump up, such as goats milk powder, oat flour, etc. The reaction helps mix in ingredients when you have a cooler bath also. When you use a powdered color it is helpful to be able to mix it in with the reaction as well. If you don't want to bother with the citric acid, you can use cream of tartar, or even baking powder in place of the baking soda/citric acid combo will work. But if you want to go really crazy you could skip the acid in the bomb and just use the baking soda then when you go to put it in the bath add in apple cider vinegar to create the reaction. That would make it really easy to make the bath bomb but you would need to add them both at the beginning of the bath for it to incorporate all the way.  Don't forget to watch the video below or you can go to it on youtube HERE.
I have tried to make Bath bombs with melted coconut oil before, and it does help them to stay together but it also doesn't mix into the bath quite as well but if your water is really warm/hot then you could probably get away with it just make sure your area that your mixing everything together is nice and warm otherwise the coconut oil will harden before you get everything mixed in.

Ingredients
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup citric acid
3 1/2 Tbsp Epsom salt
1/4 - 1/2 tsp mineral pigment
2 Tbsp Almond oil
5 Drops wintergreen oil
5 drops of vanilla
Spray bottle of water (optional)

Mix together the dry ingredients with a whisk you could sift the baking soda beforehand to get out all the clumps. Add in the oils. Spread out the mixture and mist with water, mix, repeat until it comes together when squeezed. Press firmly into a mold and turn it out.

Or skip the water and place mixture in a clean container and sprinkle a couple of tablespoons into a bath.

I post every week so if you don't want to miss a post subscribe via email in the subscription box on the side.

Glossy Pink Peppermint Lip Balm DIY

This diy was inspired by my favorite holiday ice-cream, Pink Peppermint. Mountain Rose Herbs has a great diy for tinted lip gloss that I had been wanting to try out. Since I was going for more of a balm instead of a gloss I added a little extra beeswax and I'm not really into geranium so I changed the essential oils that I used to suit my needs. I also have been really loving almond oil lately so I used that instead of macadamia nut oil.

This recipe is easier than it seams and is so great for the winter. It has a glossy finish with a rosy hue. You need to make the alkanet root infusion first but that is so simple.
Its just 5 Tbsp of liquid oil (I use almond) and 1 Tbsp of alkanet root gently heated together in a double boiler until the oil takes on the color of the root. The longer you let it sit the more color will be extracted. strain out the root and you've got your infused oil to use in the lip balm recipe. Watch the video to see how it's done and you can use the directions below to make it easier.

Pink Peppermint Lip Balm
1 Tbsp plus  1or 2 teaspoons of beeswax
1 Tbsp of coco butter
3 Tbsp of your almond oil alkanet infusion
5 drops of peppermint oil
10 drops of vanilla oleoresin

In a double boiler, melt the beeswax, then the coco butter, then add in your oil and stir till its all combined. Once its all melted add in the essential oils. Poor into lib balm tubes or tins. let sit until hardened.

This recipe can be changed up depending on what you prefer in a lip balm. If you don't want it to be as glossy and you want it to shield your lips from the winter, add an extra couple teaspoons of beeswax. if you want it to be more buttery add a half Tbsp more of coco butter. if you want it to be more of a straight up gloss play around with using a higher oil to wax/butter ratio. You could even exchange the coco butter for coconut oil and that will make it more of a gloss just definitely put that in a tin instead of a tube. And if you don't quite like how it turns out, melt it down and add a little more of something. I like to test mine out by putting a little bit in a tin and cooling it down in the fridge until it sets. This can be a bit deceiving so let it warm up slightly if you've let it sit in the fridge to long.

I hope this inspires you to try something new this week. DIY's are so fun for holiday gifts and the extra thought goes a long way to make people feel special.

Have A great week everyone!

Vanilla Orange perfume diy

This is such an easy perfume, that lasts all day with a lingering scent of vanilla, orange, rose and subtle notes of tree resins to round out the sweetness. The base is a mixture of infused vodka. You can make this whole perfume by simply infusing vodka with vanilla, orange rinds, rose petals, and tree resins, or you can use a base of vodka and add in extracts and oils, or just oils. What I did this time was mix together vanilla extract (homemade) with vodka (so that its no to strong) and added in orange oil, rose water concentrate, cedarwood oil, and elemi oil (similar to frankincense and myrrh).
If you want to make a body splash mix together equal parts rosewater or orange blossom water (or a combination of the two) and vegetable glycerin. I prefer the extract and oil recipe near the bottom. It is easiest for me since I always have the ingredients on hand.

All oil perfume
container for solid or liquid oil perfume. the liquid one should be an old essential oil bottle, a dropper bottle, or roll on.
1 oz of an oil, mango butter for solid, or jojoba, almond or another neutral oil.
5 drops of orange oil
5 drops of vanilla oil
4 drops of rose oil
1 drop of cedarwood
1 drop of elemi (or frankincense or myrrh)

All extract perfume.
This can be done three ways. Either making all the extracts separate and putting them together later, or mixing all the ingredients into one extract and having them saturate the vodka together. The third way is by mixing pre-made extracts with vodka, but you will still need to use a couple of oils.

If you are going to make the extracts separately follow how to do that here.
The ratio will need to be
5 parts vanilla (if making yourself use vanilla beans cut in half lengthwise)
5 parts orange (if making yourself use orange rind)
2 parts rose (making yourself use rose petals)
1 part cedarwood needles
1 part tree resin. (use a resin such as myrrh or frankincense)
Vodka to cover and vodka to dilute once you've made your extracts.

Mixing them before you put it into the bottle will make it easier to tell the ratios. Add in the vodka and let sit until the scent is to your desired strength. If it gets to dark be careful not to get it on your clothes.
If you make your extracts separate you will need to mix them together in about 4 weeks.
You can also make any of these extracts and mix them with essential oils.

Extract and essential oil perfume.
25 ml bottle
15 ml vodka
9 ml vanilla extract
7 drops of orange oil
4 drops rose oil or 10 drops rosewater concentrate
1 drop cedarwood oil
1 drop elemi, frankences, or myrrh

Mix into a 25 ml spray bottle.

Body splash
Using this recipe  for rosewater glycerin body splash, make your base. You can use all rosewater in this recipe or orange water and use rose oil, or do half and half. You may need to add in more orange oil no matter what depending on your preference.
Depending on what water you use, use the ratios above as a guideline.

Some other oils that can be nice to add are, fennel, tangerine, and geranium.

I sure do hope this makes sense. If you need more help feel free to comment below.

Coconut honey face wash and mask

One of my favorite things to wash my face with lately is a mixture of 4 tbsp of coconut oil mixed with 4 tbsp of raw honey and a pinch of vanilla powder. The coconut oil and honey bolth even out skin tone, moisturize, are antibacterial, and very healing. This also works  as a mild  scrub because of the vanilla powder.

When I'm ready to make a new batch I soften up my 4 Tbsp of coconut oil first. Once its a creamy consistency I whisk in the 4 Tbsp of honey. Then I take a heavy Pinch of Vanilla powder and mix it in.

Other optional add ins are cinnamon, wild tumeric (culinary tumeric is fine too, it just isnt as healing and it has a tendancy to add color instead of even it like the wild,) and ground oats. Powdered herbs such as lavender, roses, calendula, and holy basil are nice options too.

When I wash my face I like to wash it with just warm water first and I pat it dry until it is just damp. Its easier to apply with damp, warm skin. Then I use about 2 tsp and spread it around my face. I let it sit for 5-20 minutes, depending on if I forget about it, and if I don't have much time I will just go ahead and wash it off. When I'm ready to wash it off I take a warm washcloth and gently rub my face with it in circular motions. Then I rinse my washcloth and wipe off the rest. A splash of water, a gentle towl drying, and moisturizing with a few drops of jojoba oil and one drop of seabuckthorn oil is all I need to finish off my skincare for the evening.

Diy Gelatin hair gel

I like to use this hair gel to keep my hair in place when I put it up or in a braid. It is so easy to make, and costs only pennies.

1/4 - 1/2 tsp of gelatin mixed with 1/2 cup of water.
Let it heat up for a couple minutes in a sauce pan until the gelatin has dissolved. Pour into a container, and chill in the refrigerator until set.
Mix it up with a fork to make it easier to use. Keep in the refrigerator. Will last a week or two.

Additional options; use rose, or orange blossom water in place of some or all of the water. Add in some vanilla extract, or essential oils for sent.

Watch how to

Cinnamon Roll mask

This healing mask smells just like cinnamon rolls! The cinnamon and honey combine to kill any unwanted bacteria and cleanse your pores while the yogurt removes dead skin. The cinnamon will also make blood come to the surface of the skin, plumping it up and removing blemishes more quickly. Ghee can be used to clean your face (learn how to HERE) and as a moisturizer to soften and heal your skin. (Ghee also works great on cuts and burns. It also smells delightfully of nutty caramel.)

Ingredients:
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 Tbsp Yogurt
1 Tbsp Honey

Mix and apply to a clean face. Let the mask sit 5 to 20 min. depending on how much time you have, also if you have sensitive skin you may not want the cinnamon on your face as long. It will burn at first (because of the cinnamon) but soon you wont notice it.

8 reasons why I love coconut oil

Life has definitely changed for me in the last month since having Thomas, but it sure has been a joy! I just have time for a short post today, so here is a list of 8 of my favorite uses for coconut oil.

1. Under eye treatment. It works wonders on dark under eye circles.

2. With cocoa butter for an all over body butter. Melt them together and whip if you like, then keep in a pretty jar.

3. Oil pulling, for detoxing and making my teeth white. Read more about this HERE.

4. It makes excellent toothpaste, find out how HERE.
